The first thing you need to do to beat Texas Hold ‘Em poker is, learn how to calculate the odds of winning each hand. You do this by counting the cards on the table, and making an educated guess as to the most likely cards you can get, or what your opponent is holding.

It’s actually easier than you think, you just have to remember there are 52 cards in the deck, and you have 2 in your hand plus the flop, so you only have 10 cards to choose from. Counting the cards is easy, as you just have to keep track of low cards, high cards, and the ones that have already folded.

This makes counting the cards relatively easy. But, as any poker player knows, it’s not enough just to count the cards. You have to understand which cards are the most important to your hand, and which cards are the least important, as this will affect your betting. How you accomplish this is with what is called calculated aggression.

Calculated Aggression in Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament Strategy

Poker is a game of betting, so you must know when to bet and when to check. But having to do these two things at the same time is very difficult, and many players find themselves in over their heads. This is where card counting comes into play.

There are many different methods of card counting, but the most common is a one through three base counting system. Basically, through the duration you will be at the table, you will be tracking the low cards such as 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, and the high cards such as 10, J, Q, K, A. As soon as you see a low card is dealt, you increase your bet by one unit. The same applies for high cards. When you see a high card is dealt, you decrease your bet by one unit.

You must keep track of every card dealt on the table. You are calculating your bets based on how the cards have already turned out. You bet the table when you have a favorable situation. When you have a negative situation, or are at the negative edge, you must decrease your bet as more cards are dealt, or else you will bet to aggressively high.

In the late stages or when you nearly are the high blind, you can take a more aggressive approach. Since you have a larger number of cards to choose from, you can pick out the cards that are good for you, and the ones that are not so good. This is where advanced players take advantage of others.

To complement an aggressive strategy, an advanced player can also bet very high when there are fewer players left in a round, and lower when the number of players is larger. Both of these techniques are suited with aggressive betting strategies.

Beating out advanced Texas Hold ‘Em players when they are in the blinds will increase your stack. They seem to get frustrated by this point, and their chip stacks can actually go in a tailspin at this point. So, when they get to the point where only one or two players are left, they begin to play aggressively. They will bet and raise with hands that they usually wouldn’t bet or raise with in early positions.

As previously mentioned, an aggressive player will play less hands in late positions, and will always wait for a great starting hand. They also know to raise when they have a set in the hole, so they can take down the pot against a single or two opponents. Aggressive players can be very difficult to take down in the small blind, as they seem to have the best hand.

In the big blind, play your normal game, and be prepared to put your entire stack on the line when you know you have the best hand. Some people will stop here, and be done with the tournament. Others will hang around, hoping to double up. You need to be playing here for the shot at the title, for the chance to win the tournament. The risk is worth it, if you can hang in and get heads up in a heads up situation.

Don’t play too long, or you will risk being too tired to play the next tournament. Play more tournaments, get in more tournaments, you will not only learn how to play to win, but you will increase your bankroll dramatically.
